Lexilowguy showed no mercy to the foes he faced in Sunday’s Preferred Handicap at St Johns Raceway, and anyone that backed the gelding at the pari-mutuel windows got a solid return on their investment.

Sent off at decent odds of 4-1, Lexilowguy got away fourth while Major Venue – one half of a heavily-favoured two-horse entry – sprinted to the lead and had the field chasing him past the first quarter in :28.3. He was still in command at the half in 1:00, but was eventually overtaken by Lincolns Legacy in the backstretch.

Lincolns Legacy was on top at the three-quarter pole in 1:32.2, but Lexilowguy was in hot pursuit from his first-over position. Lexilowguy only needed a :30.4 final quarter to work his way to the lead and draw clear of his foes by 3-3/4 lengths in 2:03.4 for driver Colin Sheppard. Lincolns Legacy held on for second prize, with the bronze medal going to U S Charmeleon.

Trainer Walter Deering shares ownership on the six-year-old son of Astreos-Tarport Sensation with Walter Dearing, Jr. of Shearstown, NL. It was the first win of the season for the five-time winner, who now boasts a bankroll of $65,534.
