Island Filly Lowers Season's Record

Saulsbrook Alana scorched Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway Sunday afternoon posting the fastest mile of the year for a two-year-old filly on a half-mile track in Canada.

The Kevin MacLean-trained pacing filly got away last in the five-horse field in her $11,300 Lady Slipper Gold division for driver Marc Campbell. The early fractions were set by a parked out Lovineveryminute (Gilles Barrieau), who cleared at the :27.1 quarter before laying down a :56.3 half. Saulsbrook Alana, owned by Reg MacPherson of Stratford, P.E.I., advanced first over and cleared at the 1:25.1 three-quarters, then kicked clear to win by 10-3/4 lengths in 1:55.1. Lovineveryminute hung on for second while Pictonian Sareta (Gary Chappell) was third.

The mile bested Oceanview Kitty's two-year-old filly pacing record at the Summerside Raceway by two full seconds, the Maritime record for two-year-olds of any sex, and the seasonal record for a two-year-old filly on a Canadian half-mile track set by Battle of the Belles champion Lady Shadow in 1:55.4 at Grand River Raceway in Elora, Ont.

The other $11,300 Lady Slipper Gold division was won by Briannas Angel in 1:59.1 for driver Kenny Arsenault, co-owner and trainer Travis Wilkie and co-owner Robyn Veinot of Vernon Bridge, P.E.I. Babies Gigolo (Barrieau) was second with Dusty Lane Dora (Corey MacPherson) was third.

The $5,000 Lady Slipper Grassroots divisions were won by Kellys Cross (Campbell) in 1:59, Libertys Gig (Brodie MacPhee) in 2:00.4, JJ Mistress (Barrieau) in 2:01 and Ignite The Night (Barrieau) in 2:01.3.

The first $9,600 Joe O’Brien Gold division for two-year-old colt pacers was won by the front-stepping Dumas Walker in 1:58 for owner/trainer/driver Myles Heffernan of Glace Bay and Joseph Poirier of Reserve Mines, N.S. Second went to Cobra Rising (Brad Smith) with JJ Laser (Campbell) taking third.

The other Gold division was won by Rebelseven in 1:59.1 for Campbell and MacLean. Dusty Lane Oliver (Earl Smith) was second and KD Just Hold On (Stephen Mason) was third.

The $4,200 Joe O’Brien Grassroots divisions were won by Wine To Go (Arsenault) in 2:00.4, J Ps Warrior (Campbell) in 2:02, Hurrah (Mark Bradley) in 2:04.2 and Island Gigolo (MacPhee) in 1:59.3.

Campbell had four wins on the card, while Barrieau had three wins and Arsenault and MacPhee each had two.
