Driver Ernie Laffin worked out a perfect pocket trip in rein to Bettor On Than Off and timed his winning move just right to steal the glory from pacesetter Bronx Drifter just before the finish line in Truro Raceway's Winners Over Handicap Pace on Friday, Aug. 22.
Back in the bike for Friday's card, Laffin and Bettor On Than Off tracked Bronx Drifter and Clare MacDonald through panels of :27.3, :57.4 and 1:26.3 in the $2,500 feature before pouncing from the pocket with an eighth of a mile to go and getting up in time for the victory by three-quarters of a length. The winning time was 1:55.2 for the six-year-old Bettors Delight-Lights Go Out gelding, who is owned and trained by Danny Romo.
Bettor On Than Off returned $13.30 for the mild 5-1 upset. The 3-5 favourite, Like A Glove and Noah Whebby were parked for most of the mile and chased 4-1/2 lengths behind in third.
Bettor On Than Off, who took his 1:54 lifetime mark in his last win on Aug. 1 at Truro, recorded his third victory of the season in 14 starts. He now has 11 career wins along with 25 other top three finishes from 56 starts.
