Half of the Tuesday (Aug. 21) card at Woodbine Mohawk Park was dedicated to two-year-olds, with Twin B Jays ($3.10) and Boadicea ($8.90) both pacing impressive late-summer miles in their respective $15,000 conditioned events.
Twin B Jays alternated on the lead with Windsun Ricky through a :27.2 quarter before seizing command outright on approach to the far side. From there, it was no looking back for the Betterthancheddar gelding, as he sped off at head-stretch just enough to keep the late-rallying Luziana (Phil Hudon) three-quarters of a length at bay in 1:53.1. Bob McClure drove Twin B Jays for trainer Travis Henry and owners Princeton Farms Inc. and Madalyn Henry.
Boadicea ($8.90) was a tick faster among juvenile fillies, angling second-over behind pocket rival Fiery Beauty (Doug McNair) nearing the home turn before vaulting off cover, chasing down pacesetter Lady Driver (Paul MacDonell) in mid-stretch, and bracing for the late lunge of runner-up Turncoat (Jody Jamieson) to win by half a length in 1:53. Phil Hudon drove the daughter of Big Jim for trainer William Budd and owners Charles and Gordon Lawrence.
A trio of $14,000 events for Ontario-sired freshmen also took place. In the two trotting events offered, Forbidden Trade ($2.80, 1:59.4, McClure) recovered from a break to narrowly prevail, and Zig Zag ($9.40, 1:57, Mario Baillargeon) pounced from an earned pocket to beat favourite Judge Ken. The pace, restricted to Grassroots starters, saw Loud Splash ($23.60, 1:54.4, James MacDonald) circle off fifth-over cover to reel in Big Kiz for a going-away upset.
In the night's top trot, a $24,000 conditioned-optional claiming event, Lindy The Great ($3.10, Doug McNair) brushed from third up the far side and drew away to a three-length win over So Not Cool (MacDonell) and Dia Monde (Jody Jamieson) in 1:53.2. Domenico Cecere trains the four-year-old Crazed entire for K R Breeding LLC and Robert Rudolph.
