'Brian' Makes Holland His Town

Driver Roland Rey worked out the perfect pocket trip aboard Brians Town to capture the $9,000 Manitoba Great Western Stake on Saturday afternoon as the Manitoba harness racing circuit moved to Holland Fair

Trainer-driver Dean Rey and the winner’s stablemate, Kaanabba, took command of the field from Post 5 and showed the way past the quarter in :29.2 and half in 1:00.2 before being collared by Brians Town and Roland Rey at the third quarter mark in 1:32.2. Once Brians Town hit the front he was unstoppable, opening up a five and a half length lead down the stretch before hitting the wire in 2:02.2. The favoured filly, Miss Tinkerbelle (Richard Remillard), finished second and My Friend Don (Darryl Mason) was third.

Brians Town paid $11.60 to win as the 9-2 third choice. The son of Prince Brian-Sues Town notched his third win in eight starts while pushing his earnings to $9,810 for Dean Rey and breeder Norman Vuignier of Portage La Prairie, MB.

Later on the card in the seventh race, the Greg Manning-trained and driven Play On Top topped the three-year-old pacing colt track record with his 2:00.2 three length triumph. The Allamerican Ingot-Moppy Top colt shaved two-fifths of a second off Just Cant Catch Me’s former mark. Now five-for-nine in his career, Play On Top has banked close to $6,000 for his owners, Keith Earle and Bill Lowrie of Winnipeg, MB, and Donald Ransom of Boissevain, MB.

Pulling off a 25-1 upset in the finale, Rays Folly kept his challengers at bay to win the $2,700 MHHI Claiming Series Final by two and a half lengths in 2:00.4. Favourite Modern Look (Ron Cullen) and Parker Hall (Dean Ray) finished second and third respectively. Trainer Travis Cullen drove the eight-year-old Usher Hanover-Hare Chilled gelding to his first win of the season in nine starts for owner Dwayne Taylor of Minto, MB.
