After 75 years as a Boston dog track in the suburb of Revere, Wonderland Greyhound Park has announced it has called it quits
.
The public outlawing of dog racing two years ago foretold the end, and Gov. Deval Patrick’s refusal to support his legislature’s vote to allow two racinos in Massachusetts sealed it.
Wonderland’s closing announcement said it was ceasing simulcasting immediately because it no longer could compete “in a drastically changed gaming market” with gaming in neighboring states.
Suffolk Downs, Boston’s thoroughbred track, had obtained an option two years ago to buy Wonderland if Suffolk won a racino license, but with that not materializing and Suffolk fighting its own battle -- it is cutting purses by 26% -- that possibility now seems remote.
