Last year’s PEISHOA Aged Trotting Mare award winner Dusty Lane Shelby has shown no signs of slowing down at seven years old
. In fact, the daughter of Imperial Angus-Dusty Lane Nipper has stepped on the accelerator and on Tuesday night she lowered the aged mare standard at Charlottetown Driving Park.
In the $1,400 David Younker Memorial for open trotters, Dusty Lane Shelby followed last week’s Open winner, Saulsbrook Balance (Willie Murphy), through panels of :29.3, 1:00 and 1:29.4 before sprinting home for the 10-1 upset in 2:00 flat by a half length for trainer/driver Corey MacPherson. Dunmore Alpha (Ed Smallwood) closed well to grab second-place over the favourite and first-over challenger, Pick Up Point (Danny Romo).
Owned by Jaime Lynne Tierney of Cornwall, P.E.I., Dusty Lane Shelby shaved three-fifths of a second off Mystery Balance’s former track record set in 2004. The win was her second in 24 seasonal starts and pushed her earnings to $5,672. To date, Dusty Lane Shelby has won 21 times and earned $34,334 in purses.
