Westcoast Captive and Carving Credit were victorious in the opening leg of The Track On 2 Claiming Series on Sunday, Aug. 2 at the one-mile Lacombe, Alta. oval.
The pacing series is for $4,000 claimers that are non-winners of $35,000 lifetime or $15,000 in 2026.
Westcoast Captive and Rezies Gal gave trainer John Chappell a 1-2 finish in the $3,800 fillies and mares event, with the former mare looping the latter for the lead after the first quarter and going on to record her first win of the season in 19 starts. Brandon Campbell drove the 4-5 popular winner as Westcoast Captive bested her stablemate Rezies Girl and Phil Giesbrecht by 2-3/4 lengths in 1:57, with Got Sugar and Logan Gillis rounding out the top three. Westcoast Captive paid $3.80 to win.
A homebred for owner Ross Sharp of Campbell River, B.C., the six-year-old Captive Audience-Alley Scat mare, who won the 2024 Liz Johnson Memorial at The Track On 2, now has a dozen career victories and earnings just shy of $100,000.
In the $3,800 division for horses and geldings, Carving Credit returned to action from a month-long layoff and rallied past a pair of duelling leaders in the stretch for a 7-1 upset, scoring in 1:58.1 for driver Drew Campbell. Mighty Duke and Preston Shaw closed even wider to within three-quarters of a length of the winner while Chaseminkifyoudare and Brandon Campbell escaped the pocket to finish third in between. Carving Credit returned $17.80 to his backers at the betting windows.
A career winner of six races and nearly $45,000, the four-year-old Up The Credit-Wynsum Lady gelding has earned three of his victories along with six seconds in 12 starts since joining the Rebecca Kanak stable this past spring. He is owned by Trevor Williams of Winnipeg, Man.
