A trio of two-year-old trotters maintained unbeaten status as they won their $22,750 Brian Andrew Memorial divisions on the 15-dash program on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Saulsbrook Disco ($2.90), winner in the P.E.I. Colt Stakes and Atlantic Sires Stakes (ATSS) previously, controlled the tempo of the single filly division for trainer Landon Campbell and driver Marc Campbell. The daughter of Muscle Through It-Cleveland Twilight took over nearing the quarter, cut fractions of :31.1, 1:02 and 1:33, and trotted home in :30.2 to win by 2-1/4 lengths in 2:03.2 for What R The Oddz Stable of Orwell, P.E.I. Rockin Through It (Mike McGuigan) was second with Redland Trixie (Clare MacDonald) third. Saulsbrook Disco is three-for-three with $21,717 in earnings.
Stunning Speed ($2.10) dominated the first colt division for trainer-driver Mike McGuigan. The Muscle Through It-Stunning Look colt swooped to the lead in a :31.2 quarter after a wide entry to the first turn, opened up a four-length advantage to the half in 1:02 and three-quarters in 1:33 and never faced a serious challenge while winning by 4-1/2 lengths in 2:02.3. Little Pond Stables of Little Pond, P.E.I., and The Coles Stable of Charlottetown, P.E.I. own the rookie trotter, who also won divisions of the P.E.I. Colt and ATSS on the way to a three-for-three record and $21,577 in the bank. Shoe Dog Speed (Paul Langille) finished second with I Dream Of Muscles (Jim Ripley) third.
Massivearmour ($3.10) came off a P.E.I. Colt Stakes debut win and cut the mile in the other Brian Andrew Memorial colt division for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Darryl MacLean. The son of Muscle Mass-Incredible Hally led through fractions of :30.4, 1:00.4 and 1:31.3 before closing out the mile in 2:01.1. Calvin Larkin of Mermaid, P.E.I. and Erika Bradley of Charlottetown bred and own Massivearmour, who has $16,717 in the coffers through two starts. Hopthroughit (Clare MacDonald) was second, followed by Earl Speed (Jason Hughes).
In a repeat of last week's win, Mappos Lion unleashed a powerful final-quarter kick to knock off his rivals in the $10,000 fifth leg of the P.E.I. Free-For-All Series ahead of the upcoming Gold Cup and Saucer Trials.
Driver Ryan Desroche settled Mappos Lion in fourth through fractions of :28.2 and :55.4 before advancing first-over against pacesetter Get Wings (Paul Langille) down the back to three-quarters in 1:24. The nine-year-old son of Sunshine Beach-Pacific Playmate took aim on the leaders turning for home and powered through the stretch in :26.4 to win by one length in 1:51.1. Governor’s Plate elimination winner Arbitrage Hanover (Ken Murphy) finished second, with Governor’s Plate champion Get Wings (Paul Langille) third.
Taylor Doyle trains Mappos Lion ($4) for owners Hailee Currie of Rocky Point, P.E.I. and Carol Campbell of Baddeck, N.S. The winner is 11-for-12 this season and 41-for-95 lifetime with $343,727 in earnings.
Three-year-old Shanghai Whiskey downed another conditioned field for his fifth straight victory. The son of Shanghai Phil-Julep Hanover was looped by Shadows Inthe Nite (Adam Merner) on the first turn but was quickly hustled to command by Marc Campbell nearing a :28.1 quarter. He then led to the half in :57.1 and let loose going to three-quarters in 1:26.3, building his lead from two lengths at that point to 5-1/2 at the line as he completed a career-best 1:54.4 victory. Kapueno (Brodie MacPhee) took second off a first-over effort with Rosiesmightymoe (Gilles Barrieau) third.
Shanghai Whiskey ($2.10) has reeled off five wins in a row after a zero-for-four start to the season. His victories include the P.E.I. Colt Stakes, which represents the biggest contribution to his $31,556 bankroll for owner-trainer-breeder Wade Myers of Charlottetown. The gelding is now six-for-19 lifetime.
Trumpster Blues ($5.30) captured the 15th-race finale in 1:52.3 for driver Adam Merner, trainer David O’Brien and owner Tommy Collings of Mount Stewart, P.E.I. Rocks Shining Star (Brady Sweet), also owned by Collings, finished second with Malevolent (Langille) third.
Mantario ($22) supplied an upset in the Wilbur and Pauline MacDonald Memorial in Race 9, rallying from fifth to win in 1:54.2 for driver David Dowling and trainer Jennifer Doyle. The win completed a double for the Doyle stable after Bet On Evil ($2.60) won Race 8 in 1:56.1, also with Dowling in the bike.
Barrieau recorded three driving victories. He scored with Doctor Grenfell ($8.10) for trainer Nicholas Oakes, Massivearmour to take win number 5,500 of his career and Streakantonio ($8.80) for trainer Ron Matheson.
Marc Campbell had a grand slam, winning with Big Bad Bruiser ($4.40) in the opener for Neil Bambrick, Saulsbrook Disco, Littlebit Of Lovin ($2.60) for trainer Earl Watts in the seventh and Shanghai Whiskey.
Me And The Boys ($25.40) also won for Watts, this time with Paul Langille in the seat.
The total wager on the card was $146,631.
