After three runner-up finishes in prior Prospect Series legs, the Lindsey Kerr-trained Wicked Spark scored her first career win in the Ontario-sired event for two-year-old pacing filles on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 18 at Clinton Raceway.
Wicked Spark ($10.50) won the faster of two $8,000 divisions in 2:00.2, leading all the way in her fifth career start with Daryl Thiessen along for the ride. The homebred McWicked-Got Some Spark filly is owned by Sally Charlton of Tecumseh, Ont. Gurl Swag followed 1-1/4 lengths behind in the pocket while the favoured first-over challenger, Miss Danni Song, coming off a successful career debut in the Aug. 7 leg at Grand River Raceway, finished third.
The other division was won by Prospect Series newcomer Athleta ($4.40) in 2:04.2 by one length after quickly regrouping from a break in stride while leading to the final turn for trainer/driver Martin Lachance. The homebred All Bets Off-Life Book filly, who has made four starts and won back-to-back races, is owned by Jack Darling Stables of Cambridge, Ont. Brydown Wait N See was forced three-wide by the pocket-popping favourite, Greystone Playgirl, and got up for second in that battle for the minor spoils.
