Trainer-driver Don Howlett hustled Prairie Mystic off a pylon trip to a season’s-best mile when taking the $2,700 Open Pace at the Glenboro Fair on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Outlaw Kismet held an uncontested lead through a pace of :27.3, :56.1 and 1:25.1 with Sin Machqueen faltering from the pocket heading to three-quarters. Gray Zee and Prairie Mystic circumvented the tiring horse and drew towards Outlaw Kismet nearing the stretch drive. Prairie Mystic kicked to the finish quickest of all to stop the clock in 1:54.4 with Gray Zee a half-length behind in second and Outlaw Kismet third.
Owned by Ralph Morrow, Wanda Howlett and Dwayne Taylor, Prairie Mystic won her third race from 17 starts this season and her 13th from 97 overall, earning $122,655. The six-year-old Mystery Chase mare paid $5.90 to win.
Witch Doctor wired her competition in the race prior, taking the $2,200 Fillies and Mares Open Pace in 2:00.3. Owned by driver Darryl Mason, trainer Sherri Mason and Paula Mason, the six-year-old Fort Apache mare took control heading to a :30.1 opening quarter and endured first-over pressure from Jenn On The Rocks through a 1:01.1 half and by three-quarters in 1:31.3. Witch Doctor rebuffed the challenge through the stretch to best Jenn On The Rocks by a length with pocket-sitter Alot Of Sense third.
Winning her second race from six starts this season and her 15th from 98 overall, Witch Doctor has earned $73,055. She paid $17.80 to win.
Lightnin N Thunder bested Munchie Chris in a $3,120 race-off for Manitoba-bred pacing two-year-olds in the first race on the card. The daughter of In The Irons, trained by owner Lorraine Rey and driven by Dean Rey, gradually widened her lead on Munchie Chris heading towards a 25-length win in 2:08.3. She broke her maiden with the lifetime-best mile and has banked $1,866.
