A compact field of five faced the gate in Thursday’s lone division of the Define The World Series, with Cantabernet turning in a maiden-breaking score in the $14,000 affair.
Randy Waples pointed Cantabernet to the lead from Post 3, and they cruised by the quarter pole in :31 before being overtaken in the backstretch by Cruze On Over. That youngster sliced out middle panels 1:01.3 and 1:31.1 before being confronted by race favourite Cantabernet. Waples angled out with Cantabernet and the Brad Maxwell pupil charged home in :28.2 to win by 2-1/4 lengths over Sweet Talkin Hall in 2:00. Cruze On Over faded to finish third.
Maxwell shares ownership on the two-year-old son of Cantab Hall-Magenta Hall with Ben Mudry of Toronto, Ont. Together, they’ve watched the rookie assemble a 1-2-0 record from just three starts. Purchased for $22,000 from last year’s Lexington Select Yearling Sale, Cantabernet has banked $14,000 to date.
Another noteworthy performance from Thursday’s card was the 1:54 score for claiming pacer Intended Style. His victory extended his winning streak to five-in-a-row for owner/trainer Corey Johnson of Rockwood, Ont.
Doug McNair worked out a covered-up trip for the 12-year-old son of No Pan Intended-Stylish Smile, and the veteran smoked home in :27.1 to win by a head over Rockabella.
It was the ninth win of the season and the 45th lifetime tally for the career winner of $320,204.
