Surgery For Derby Winner Mine That Bird

According to a story in today’s edition of The New York Times, this year’s Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird will need surgery to correct an entrapped epiglottis

.

The revelation was made after an endoscopic examination was performed on the gelding following a five-eighths of a mile workout earlier this morning at Saratoga.

The surgery, which will be performed by renowned veterinarian Dr. Patty Hogan, will take place on Tuesday morning at the Ruffian Equine Medical Center. The procedure isn’t expected to derail him from a scheduled start in the $1 million Travers Stakes on August 29.
