Classy Guy showed his class as he joined the top level at Hiawatha Horse Park and captured the $6,000 Preferred 3 Handicap Trot on Saturday, Aug. 16 in an 8-1 upset.
Nick Steward hustled the gelding out from post five to take the pocket spot behind the faster-leaving Made Of Magic (Dean Wall) in a :27.2 first quarter. There was no movement through a tepid :59 half, and Made Of Magic looked to slip the field as he sprinted to three-quarters in 1:27, gaining a three-length cushion. He held the lead into the lane, but Classy Guy chased down the tiring pacesetter and went by him by three-quarters of a length for a 1:57.1 score. Made Of Magic held second with Coming Fashion (Don Rankin) third. The winner returned $19.50.
Classy Guy has won back-to-back starts after opening the season 0-for-13. Jeff Graham trains the Cantab Hall-Personal Style gelding, a 19-time winner in 206 career starts with $269,796 in earnings. Karry Howard of Wardsville, Ont. owns the nine-year-old.
