Trainer Colin Johnson enjoyed a solid Thursday evening at Rideau Carleton Raceway, and Peenie did his part by winning the nightly feature for his high percentage handler.
Peenie took on six foes in the $12,000 Preferred for Johnson, who watched the seven-year-old son of Real Artist-Tre Cress rally to a one-length score in 1:52.1 with driver Denis St. Pierre in tow. Peenie was parked past the quarter-pole in a :27-second clip before clearing to the top and enjoying a brief stint on the lead. Time To Rocknroll and Roethblissberger took turns on the lead through middle splits of :55 and 1:22.3 before Peenie used his off-the-pace skills to post the victory. Chasin Racin came on to grab the runner-up spot, while Cajon Thunder took home the bronze medal.
Sent off as the 3-2 favourite, Peenie won for the 39th time in his career and for the third time this season. Johnson shares ownership on the career winner of $548,548 with Ecurie JGV Enrg of Laval, QC.
Johnson, who also clicked with Stonebridge Wish (1:52.4) and Machtothemoon (1:58), watched his yearly win total climb to 76 with the three-win performance. The conditioner is quickly closing in on $27 million in lifetime earnings.
