Hp Lis Shadow erased six names from the Grand River Raceway history books as he set a new track record for an aged pacing gelding in a conditioned race on Monday, Aug. 11.
He got a live pocket ride behind the favoured Premier First Star (Austin Sorrie), who was in go mode from the moment the wings folded in the $6,500 dash. Jason Ryan slid Hp Lis Shadow in behind that rival early, and Premier First Star flew through fractions of :26.2, :54.3, and 1:22 with no one able to mount a challenge into the strong tempo. Hp Lis Shadow popped the pocket on the final turn and circled the weary pacesetter before sprinting away from the field down the stretch to win by 4-1/2 lengths in 1:51. Harry G (Samuel Fillion) closed for place, followed by Reactor Now A (Brett MacDonald). The winner returned $4.60.
Hp Lis Shadow knocked two-fifths of a second off the previous record for an older altered pacer, which was jointly held by six horses — Woodmere Rollnpop, Hungry To Succeed, Smokestack, Keystone Dakota, The Greek Freak, and Bet The Bb.
He earned his third victory in 18 starts this year as he dropped down from Woodbine Mohawk Park company. Shayne Barrington trains the six-year-old son of Shadow Play-Lisbella, who is owned by Imagine Stable of L’Ange-Gardien, Que. The gelding is a 21-time winner with $255,827 in bankroll from 110 carer outings.
