Fresh off a close second-place finish to world champion Put On A Show in the Lady Liberty on Hambletonian Day, Canadian-owned Rebeka Bayama circled a field of Invitational mares to take a shiny new mark of 1:48.3 on Saturday night at Meadowlands Racetrack.
Driven by Mike Lachance for trainer Pat Lachance, Rebeka Bayama found herself parked out and trailing the field by nearly eight lengths early on in the $50,000 Mares Invitational. However, she followed the cover of Krispy Apple and Tim Tetrick, who wore down the popular front-runner Rocklamation and Ron Pierce into the stretch, and used a :26.4 final frame to prevail by two lengths. Early leader Royal Cee Cee N and Corey Callahan finished second while Feeling You and Andy Miller rounded out the top three finishers.
Rebeka Bayama paid $7.40 to win as the 5-2 second choice.
The five-year-old Leader Bayama mare, a winner of 20 races and more than $450,000 in lifetime earnings, is owned and bred by Bayama Farms Inc. of Saint-Andre-D'Argenteuil, Que. Saturday's win was her fourth in 10 seasonal starts and shaved more than a full second off her lifetime mark.
