Two-year-old pacing fillies faced off on their first Alberta Sires Stakes event of their careers on Saturday afternoon at Alberta Downs with Outlawlookslikrain and Crackers Hot Shot winning their respective divisions.

In the first of two $27,100 Alberta Starlet divisions, Outlawlookslikrain rebounded from a break in the Emerald Filly Pace and overcame an outside post seven start to win in 2:00.3 for trainer-driver Connie Kolthammer.

Va Va Vroom (Rod Hennessy) fired to command from the six-hole and led the field past early fractions of :30 and 1:01.4. At the half, even-money favourite Shadow Time (Jim Marino) advanced first up with Cracklin Millie (Gerry Hudon) following her cover and Outlawlookslikrain moving third over.

Shadow Time moved up to apply pressure to the leader into the final turn and the top two hit the three-quarters mark together in 1:31.1. However, Outlawlookslikrain was full of late pace and came flying by on the outside with :28.3 final quarter speed to score the victory by one and a half lengths.

Outlawlookslikrain paid $10.10 to win. Shadow Time held on for second despite suffering broken equipment while Wish I Was (Keith Clark) finished third.

The winning Smart Shark-Ladyreigns filly is owned and bred by the Outlaw Stable of Falun, Alta.

Crackers Hot Shot captured the second division in 2:01.1 for owner, trainer and driver Rodney Starkewski of Lamont, Alta.

When the wings of the gate folded, Sharkys Law (Rod Hennessy) worked her way to command from post six and reached the opening quarter mark in :29.4 before even-money favourite Outlawcherishafool (Connie Kolthammer) pulled the pocket and took over the top spot. However, her lead was short-lived as Barona Lilac (Kelly Hoerdt) advanced from fourth and cleared to command during the pedestrian second panel.

After the 1:02 half-mile mark, Crown And Ginger (Tim Brown) tipped off the pylons flushing Outlawcherishafool from the pocket to apply pressure to the leader past three-quarters in 1:32.4. Meanwhile, Crackers Hot Shot had picked up cover from the backfield and the Camcracker-Shesahotshot filly rallied wide and unleashed a :27.3 final kicker to come on for the two length victory.

Crackers Hot Shot paid $17.70 for the upset win. Outlawcherishafool finished second and Blazing By (John Chappell) finished third.

Two-year-old fillies will return to Alberta Downs on Saturday, Sept. 1 for their second ABSS leg, the Alberta Starburst.
