In a showdown of four veteran pacers, Simon Poirier and Chad MacDonnell's Modern Best ($4.50) used a pocket trip to upend early pacesetter Doubleshotascotch in Wednesday evening's (Aug. 1) featured $1,150 winners-over event at Inverness Raceway.
Doubleshotascotch, who won four of his last six starts at Inverness leading up to this event, was sent to the fore from post 4 by Ryan Campbell, while Modern Best secured the pocket from the pole to track early splits of :28.3 and :58.2. Up the far side on the second occasion, Redmond Doucet angled Modern Best out of the pocket to engage Doubleshotascotch, and the pair took charge past three-quarters in 1:29.1.
Turning for home, Modern Best had easily put away Doubleshotascotch and drew three lengths clear of the second-over Bonnys Mac (Lanny Hanscombe) at the eighth pole. In the end, Modern Best prevailed by a two-length margin in 1:58.2. Bonnys Mac chased to be a clear second, while Doubleshotascotch could only muster third honours.
Stanley Harper trains 30-time winner Modern Best, who captured her fourth win in five starts. The 10-year-old daughter of Modern Art, jointly the youngest among the quartet, was also the lone mare in the field.
