Kathy Cecchin trainee Crazy World, sent off as the 8-5 favourite, powered first over to an open-length victory in the lone $8,800 division of Prospect Series for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings on Sunday afternoon (July 9) at Dresden Raceway.
Driver Garrett Rooney floated Crazy World into fourth as pylon-starter Xtra Cheese dashed to a three-length lead in a :29 first quarter. Rooney then pulled Crazy World first up and drew within a length of the leader past a :59.4 half. Crazy World upped the pressure on Xtra Cheese to three-quarters in 1:29 and soon disposed of the pacesetter spinning off the final turn, scooting 4-1/2 lengths clear to the finish of a 1:57.3 mile. It Takes Two took second from Xtra Cheese in third with Dows Up fourth.
Kathy Cecchin co-owns Crazy World, a gelded son of Control The Moment, with John Cecchin. The sophomore won his third race from 12 starts and has now earned $30,415. He paid $5.30 to win.
The undercard feature, a $5,000 Preferred 3 Pace, went to Kenny Joe as he pushed from second over to a head decision in 1:57.4.
Driver Dan Clements placed the seven-year-old Shadow Play gelding onto cover from odds-on favourite Pembrook Legacy N after a :28.2 first quarter and followed steadily through fractions of :59.2 and 1:28.2. As pacesetter Big Mach N folded on the front and Pembrook Legacy N seized the lead, Kenny Joe came charging to the outside and fought gamely through the lane to grab a narrow victory at odds of 8-1.
The homebred for trainer Kevin Gillis grabbed his 20th win from 101 starts and has now earned $143,235. He returned $18.10 in the slight upset.
Sunday's card at Dresden featured a fundraiser for Harness the Hope, a charity aimed to help the ongoing fight against breast cancer. The charity drive on Sunday raised just about $1,400 for breast cancer awareness.
