In light of the recent success of the Churchill Downs night racing experiment, New Jersey State Senate president Richard J. Codey has announced that he will "push hard" to have lights installed at Monmouth Park in Oceanport
.
According to an article on app.com Codey initially presented the idea in 2004, weeks before he became the state's acting governor - a position he held for 14 months – but the idea was shot down by the community and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.
"Look at what happened in Kentucky. If we could double business at Monmouth Park, I think the Sports Authority would do cartwheels," Codey told app.com. "I'm going to push hard for it. I'm going to talk to racing officials. They've got to change their business model."
