Trainer-driver Nate Sobey swooped by duelling leaders with Outlaw Sharktastic to grab the front and roll clear to a 1:53.2 victory in the $14,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace at Century Downs on Saturday (July 8).
Metaki left jointly with 2-1 favourite In High Cotton for the lead and landed on the pylons to a :27.4 first quarter, but In High Cotton raced stuck on the rim moving past the stands first time. In High Cotton remained at Metaki’s side through a :56.1 half and started to tire from the overland journey up the backstretch. Sobey, meanwhile, angled Outlaw Sharktastic off the pegs from fifth and circled towards the lead passing three-quarters in 1:24.2 to grab command from Metaki. Outlaw Sharktastic strode for home on a handy lead to cross the beam two lengths better than Metaki with Grey Sea rallying for third and pocket-sitter Blue Star Mystic in fourth.
Sobey co-owns Outlaw Sharktastic, a five-year-old mare by Smart Shark, with Glenda Winkleman and Glenn Pinel. She won her 10th race from 70 starts and has now banked $91,854. Outlaw Sharktastic paid $19.10 to win.
