At the age of 11, the argument could be made that trotting gelding Scene A Magician has possibly lost a step from his prime, but his recent form indicates he's still got a few solid tricks up his sleeve.
On Saturday, July 5, Scene A Magician ($3.00) was sent off as the 1-2 choice in the $5,200 Preferred 3 Handicap Trot at Hiawatha Horse Park. Coming into this race a perfect three-for-three on the year, and a winner in this class last time out, that favouritism was both justified and rewarded.
Driver Robert Doyle wanted the front with 1-2 choice Scene A Magician and got it, pushed three-wide into the opening turn from post six and not clearing to the top until after a :27.4 opening panel. After backing it down with a :58.2 half, Scene A Magician hit the third station in 1:27 and then held off the late rally of Riversdream (Natasha Day) to win by just over a length in 1:58. Livingitlarge (Lorne House) completed the top trio.
Jennifer Pinkerton of Mount Brydges, Ont. owns and trains Scene A Magician (Daylon Magician - Scene Duharas) now a 37-time winner with more than $407,000 in career earnings. A competitor in Ontario's Preferred trotting ranks for the last eight seasons, Scene A Magician's current four-race win streak is the longest of his 156-start career.
