Porthill Alf, one of the toughest competitors in Island racing, pulled out an upset victory over race favourite Outlawpositivcharg in Saturday night’s feature at the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre.

The Duane MacEachern trainee, who was handled by driver Michael Stevenson, prevailed by a nose in a time of 1:57.3. The nine-year-old son of Largo is owned by Marvyn Webster of Kensington, PE.

Outlawpositivcharg left hard from post six in an attempt to establish control of the race, but Porthill Alf decided to take him on through an opening quarter of :27.2. Porthill Alf, who eventually released the former Governor’s Plate winner to the lead, settled into the pocket and drafted behind the leader through splits of :57 and 1:28.1 before mounting a rally in the stretch. He caught Outlawpositivcharg right on the finish line. Lakota Hall was third.

It was the fourth win of the season in 14 attempts for Porthill Alf, who is now a 46-time winner in his career. He has banked in excess of $127,000 to date.

Driver Brian MacPhee picked up a memorable victory when he guided Incredible Mike to a 2:02.3 decision in the sixth race. It was the pacer’s first win, but for MacPhee it was the 1,500th win of his career.

The sulky sitter from Clyde River, PE went over the $2-million mark in career earnings earlier this season.
