'Doubleshot' Doubles Up In Nova Scotia

Fresh off his pillar-to-post featured win on Canada Day, veteran pacer Doubleshotascotch ($7.30) proved he can score from off the pace as well in Wednesday evening's (July 4) $1,150 winners-over pace at Inverness Raceway.

After racing in the back half of the field of six through early splits of :28.4 and :57.2, the 12-year-old Dragon Again gelding mounted his bid up the far side on the second circuit while pacesetter Shanghai B G (Alex MacQuarrie) was attempting to fend off Tipperbackjack (Redmond Doucet), who offered strong two-wide pressure from the outset. As the top pair duelled into attrition through the third quarter, Ryan Campbell swung Doubleshotascotch three-wide to circle them and quickly gain 2-1/2 lengths of clearance on the final turn. That margin remained nearly intact at the end of a 1:59.3 mile; runner-up R Es Aiden (Rodney Gillis) could only gain another quarter of a length after sweeping from last. P H Showboat (Lewis MacDonell) finished third.

John MacDonald owns and trains Doubleshotascotch, who passed the $800,000 career earnings plateau with his 41st lifetime win.
