Not even a first-over journey could keep Starring Role out of the winner’s circle on Sunday, as the five-year-old Dan Sifert trainee rolled to an impressive 1:53.4 score in Alberta Downs’ $10,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace

.

Starring Role (Brandon Campbell) slipped into the three-hole on the way to the quarter pole, while Western Bee supplied the field with an opening panel of :26.2. Western Bee was still the leader past the mid-way point in :56.1, but Starring Role started a move to the outside.

Western Bee was still in command of the tempo at the three-quarter pole in 1:24, with Starring Role a little more than a length away with just the final quarter remaining. A :29.3 closing kick was more than enough for Starring Role to haul down and pace away from Western Bee, who was 2-1/4 lengths behind the winner in a time of 1:53.4. Lady And Thetrench rallied to finish third.

Sifert of Calgary shares ownership on the talented distaffer with Fun For Fans of Airdrie, AB. The mare, who won for the third time this season, has racked up 13 lifetime tallies while banking more than $133,000 in the process.
