After being stamped the favourite of the Monday (July 31) evening Preferred 2 Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park, Adare Castle took home the winner's share of the $32,000 purse with James MacDonald in the bike.
MacDonald and Adare Castle set out from post five in the field of seven top trotters in the feature. Hp Mama B and Scott Young led the field to the quarter in :28 while Franks Angel (Bob McClure) followed her lead and Adare Castle was third. MacDonald pulled his right line and sent Adare Castle to the top. The dynamic duo of O'Brien Award winners controlled the remainder of the mile through panels in :56.2 and 1:24.3 before using a :28.1 last quarter en route to victory. Adare Castle cleared the wire one length the best in 1:52.4. Franks Angel finished second and Perfetto (Dagfin Henriksen) rounded out the top three.
Trainer Mark Etsell co-owns the four-year-old Muscle Mass-Pacific Edge mare with Robert Newton, Graham Hopkins and Peter Porter. This season, Adare Castle has boasted six wins, one second and one third in 11 starts with $150,500 earned. She owns a record of 20-7-1 in 33 career starts, moving her career bankroll to $1,305,191. She paid $4.40 to win.
