Trainer Richard Moreau sent three winners around the Mohawk Racetrack oval on Saturday, July 29, including American Virgin, who won the $34,000 Preferred Pace in 1:50.2.
Sitting last as Nirvana Seelster cut the fractions, driver Doug Mcnair crept her closer to the leader before catching cover from Fool Me Once around the final turn. Tipping off that cover, American Virgin chased Nirvana Seelster and overtook him in late stretch to win by a nose, with Fool Me Once a close third.
Owned by Brad Grant, American Virgin won his 22nd race in 87 starts, pushing his career earnings to $493,226. The five-year-old gelding by Always A Virgin returned $11.00 to win.
Moreau's other two wins came with Witch Dali, who won in near wire-to-wire fashion as the 8-5 favorite in an $18,000 filly and mare conditioned pace, and with Musselsfrmbrussels, who swept to the lead around the final turn, progressing to a two-length victory in a $12,000 conditioned pace.
Witch Dali, a six-year-old mare by Dali, won her 20th start in 68 tries in her 1:51 victory, paying $5.50 to win. Musselsfrmbrussels, a nine-year-old horse by Modern Art, won his 40th start in 193 tries, paying $10.50 to win.
