Heather Hawkins's Burn Em Up Burr ($5.20) kept a sustained first-over bid from Modern Best at bay to take Wednesday night's (July 3) $1,150 winners-over pace at Inverness Raceway in 1:59.4.

The eight-year-old Whosurboy gelding and driver Gerard Kennedy used pole position to full advantage, establishing the early lead in the field of five and controlling fractions of :30.4, 1:00.4 and 1:30.4. Modern Best (Lanny Hanscombe) offered mild outside pressure through the middle splits, but faded on the far turn.

Off the home turn, Burn Em Up Burr maintained a 1-1/2 length advantage over pocket rival Makes Me Stupid (Andrew MacLean), and held that margin intact throughout the final furlong. Chase N Madi (Rodney Gillis) overcame stalled cover to finish third.

For Burn Em Up Burr, it was the 24th win of his career and his second of the season.
