Global News, resuming her campaign after nearly a month off, captured her first $5,200 Preferred 3 Handicap Trot of the season at Hiawatha Horse Park, beating the boys convincingly on Saturday, July 26.

Garrett Rooney maneuvered her into the four-hole, where he kept her parked through :27.1 and :56.2 panels before putting her into play as they straightened onto the backstretch. She quickly caught the first-over Bucktober (Scott Wray), who overhauled pacesetter Livingitlarge (Lorne House) to take command before three-quarters in 1:26.3. Global News ensured that rival’s lead didn’t last long, rolling by him on the final turn, and she trotted home with authority to complete the victory in 1:56.3. Monteverdi (Nick Steward) finished second, 2-3/4 lengths in arrears, with Seven Iron (Mark MacDonell) third.

Global News lowered her lifetime mark with the win, her third this year in 17 starts for owner/trainer Angie Carroll of Iona, Ont. The six-year-old Archangel-Going Global mare reached the 20 career win plateau and boosted her bankroll to $132,009 in her 107th start. She paid $10.50 to win.

Ladies From Hell made it a mare sweep of the co-features as she tripped out to take the $5,200 Preferred 3 Pace in a lifetime-best effort. Rooney dropped her in behind the obstinate rail starter Dows Up (House) and sat the two-hole as that opponent carved out fractions of :26.4, :56.1, and 1:24.1. In the stretch, Ladies From Hell waited for room at the rail, then surged into the clear to win by two lengths in 1:53.2. Leave It To Luther (Nick Steward) finished gamely for second over Come On Artie (Andy Moore).

Ladies From Hell earned a new speed badge as she tallied her 54th lifetime win in 221 appearances. The mare is eight-for-20 this season and has won two straight at the Sarnia oval for trainer Michael Sumner, who co-owns her with Shae Sumner of London, Ont. The 11-year-old daughter of Classic Card Shark-Jennys Place has now earned $346,896. She returned $3.90 to her backers.
