Hippodrome 3R will play host to the second round of the Breeders Trophy Series for three-year-old pacers Sunday afternoon (July 28) and heading one of the four divisions is Quebec champion, Boomboom Tonight.
There are two $7,500 divisions for the colts and two $7,500 divisions for the fillies.
Bred, owned and trained by Elisabeth Pothier of St-Christophe-D’Arthabask, Boomboom Tonight (Sportswriter - Rapid Tonight) goes from post six in the eighth race colt division with driver Pascal Berube on board. The pair is the 6-5 morning line favourite.
Last year, Boomboom Tonight won five of his seven starts including the final of the Quebec Championship in his division. After some rough goes at Mohawk Park, Potheir brought Boomboom Tonight back to H3R for this series and the gelding has come back to winning form with back-to-back victories, the fastest a lifetime mark of 1:55. The fastest mile by any three-year-old this season.
Racing on the front-end, Boomboom Tonight has destroyed his competition the last two weeks, winning by 8-1/2 lengths and 5-1/2 lengths in each outing.
His competition includes Ambitious Mind (post five), who has won two of his last three starts with driver Francis Picard. Also a contender is HP Coaticook (post eight) who was second to Boomboom Tonight two starts back.
The first division for the colts is the seventh race and shapes up to be a real slugfest with Olaf Du Lac (Sportswriter) taking on Kinnder Reptile, Gladiator S BG and Kinnder Kenogami.
Olaf Du Lac (post one) is a return winner and will have Pierre-Luc Roy in the sulky. Last week, breeder and co-owner Louis-Philippe Roy made a rare stop at H3R just to drive his colt, winning in 1:57.1.
Gladiator S BG (post six) was second in that race, parked out first-over against Olaf Du Lac. Pascal Berube drives Gladiator S BG, who sports four wins this season.
Kinnder Reptile (post five) was scratched sick for the opening round of the series, but returns with driver Marie-Claude Auger having won four of his last six starts, the fastest a 1:57.1 record mile for owner, breeder and trainer Denitza Petrova.
Kinnder Brosseau (post four) is a return winner in the field for driver Stephane Brosseau, winning his last start in 1:58.2. He has a record of 1:56.2 taken at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
The three-year-old pacing fillies get underway in the third race that is headlined by return winner The Heart Valley (State Treasurer).
With Marie-Claude Auger in the sulky, The Heart Valley has won her last two starts since arriving at H3R from Ontario for trainer Louis Philippe Turcotte. She won an opening round of the series with a lifetime mark of 1:58.2 and followed that up with another 1:58.2 triumph last week. She starts from post two.
Also in the race is another Louis-Philippe Roy bred and owned filly, Ronda Du Lac from post three. She will be driven by Louis-Philippe Roy’s brother, Pierre-Luc Roy and two starts back won at H3R in 1:59.3.
The fifth race second filly division features Art Of The Sport (Sportwriter), who starts from post three with Auger in the sulky. She is winless in 19 career starts, but shows strong performances at both Georgia Downs and Northfield Park before coming to H3R.
A return winner in the field is Wicked Discovery (post five) for driver Pascal Berube. She won last week at H3R in 2:00.3. Other contenders include D Gs Lorijeanne (post two) and Mas Diva (post four).
First race post time on Sunday is 12:00 p.m.
