Louie Fernandez Euthanized

Trot Insider has learned that six-year-old gelding Louie Fernandez has had to be euthanized after having severely injured a suspensory and breaking a bone in his foot during his last race at Summerside Raceway on July 15

.

The son of Cole Muffler, who was commonly referred to as 'The Mexican Cherry Picker' by track announcer Vance Cameron, was owned by Robbie and Wendell Shaw, the latter of which also performed the training duties. He came to the Shaw stables in the fall of 2008 and quickly became the barn star. He went on to earn Summerside's Aged Pacing Horse of the Year honors in his first full season in 2009.

The Shaw Stables turned Louie Fernandez into a top class horse around the region. 'Lou' always gave owners and barn hands something to cheer about, and had a heart like a lion.

From 81 career starts, Louie Fernandez compiled a record of 15-10-10, banked $30,553 and held a mark of 1:55.2, which was taken over Mohawk Racetrack at the age of three.

He will be sadly missed at by many at Summerside Raceway.
