Warrawee Lassie posted a second straight victory in the In Free Trotting Series for two-year-old fillies on Sunday night at Mohawk Racetrack
, giving herself a chance at the series sweep next weekend.
With Rick Zeron in the driver’s seat, the daughter of Kadabra-Independent Lassie got away fourth in the early going and watched as stablemate Excellence put up the opening quarter of :30.4. As the field straightened up towards the half, Warrawee Lassie went on the attack and took over just before the half in 1:02.2.
None of her rivals were able to seriously threaten from that point on and Warrawee Lassie went on to win by more than two lengths in 2:01.4, tacking on a :28.2 final quarter for good measure. Scottish Starlet rallied from last to finish second with Tyrone Showgirl finishing third.
It was the second win in just three career tries for Warrawee Lassie who is owned by trainer Frank O’Reilly along with Dr. Mike Wilson, John Fielding and Jim Fielding of Ontario. The winner’s share of the purse increased her earnings to just over $20,000.
In the second division, Gliding Fashion rallied from well off the pace to score by two lengths for driver Sylvain Filion in 2:01.2. The daughter of Yankee Glide-Fashionable Liv, who made a break and finished eighth in the first leg, turned back Julia Jet and Tymal Tiara for the win.
It was the first win in three career starts for the filly who is owned by trainer Rob Fellows along with Steve Bregman, George Wilton and Hartley Borenstein of Ontario. The win bumped her up over $26,000 in seasonal earnings.
The $42,700 final of the In Free Trotting Series will go postward next Sunday night at Mohawk Racetrack.
