Track record holder Charmbo Stormy returned to Grand River Raceway on Wednesday, July 23 and went coast-to-coast to capture the featured $11,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred 2 Pace.
The mare out-left two inner rivals from post five to secure command heading into the first turn and reached the quarter in :26.1. Austin Sorrie kept her pacing at a solid clip through the half in :55.2 and three-quarters in 1:23.2, and she straightened for home with a two-length advantage. Shoot The Whiskey (Travis Cullen) and Saulsbrook Olympia (J Harris), who were first- and second-over respectively, closed in on the pacesetter down the lane, but Charmbo Stormy held on for a half-length win in 1:52. Shoot The Whiskey finished second over Saulsbrook Olympia. The win price was $4.50.
Charmbo Stormy, who set the record for an aged pacing mare at Grand River in her last win on June 11, is now eight-for-22 on the campaign for trainer Jared Mann. The Sportswriter-Charmbo Lucky mare has racked up 24 wins in 136 lifetime appearances and earned $193,479. Ronald Nobes of Fergus, Ont. owns the seven-year-old.
