Michel Nolette’s homebred The Light Speed notched yet another win in the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday night (July 23).
Trainer-driver Guy Gagnon settled The Light Speed into seventh while Dylans Bank cleared control to a :26.3 first quarter. Day Delight then got underway from third and pressed uncovered through a :55 half with Highlandbeachsbest and The Light Speed in tow. Dylans Bank upped the ante to three-quarters, clocked in 1:22.3, to sting Day Delight and vanquish his bid through the final turn. Though The Light Speed readied for his charge into the lane and swarmed from near last to first to snag a half-length victory in 1:52. Mayhem Like Me also rallied from the back but settled for second with Dylans Bank third and Vanilla Malted fourth.
The Light Speed has now won 38 times from 86 starts and earned $275,954. The five-year-old gelding by Moon Beam paid $4.30 to win.
Gagnon collected a natural hat trick to cap the Sunday card. His trainees Western Phil (1:55.3 winning mile; $18.60 to win) and Make It Come True (1:54.2; $7.60) swept the late daily double.
