Heavily-favoured So Much More captured Friday’s $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park, but Karma Seelster made her really earn it.
So Much More, who was sent off as the 4-5 favourite, grabbed an early pocket trip behind Marloe Hanover who sliced out the opening quarter in :27.4. James MacDonald rallied So Much More to the top in the backstretch and they continued to wheel the field past the mid-way point in :56.2.
The third quarter got very interesting when Karma Seelster sprinted out of the three-hole and was stride for stride with So Much More at the three-quarter pole in 1:24. Karma Seelster gained a short-lived lead over So Much More in the lane before that mare fought back with :26.2 speed and posted the half-length decision over Karma Seelster in 1:50.2. Lit De Rose rallied from last to finish third.
Trainer Don Beatson co-owns the five-year-old daughter of Big Jim-Ladysai with Kenn Beatson and Cole England. The partners watched the O’Brien Award-winning mare improve her 2021 record to 5-4-0 from 12 attempts while pushing her season’s earnings to $108,800. The 36-time winner has banked $653,167 to date.
