After winning her first qualifier on July 16, rookie pacing filly In The Mood struck a winning note again on Friday morning (July 23), posting a 1:57.2 qualifying win at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
James MacDonald once again drove the Sunshine Beach-Race Miss filly, yielding to Cassini (Sylvain Filion) through a :29.3 first quarter before reclaiming control up the backstretch and rating middle sectionals of :59.1 and 1:29.4. Off the home turn, In The Mood crescendoed to another gear, sprinting off in :27.3 to defeat Cassini by 3-1/2 lengths and shave two seconds off her previous mark. Macho Phil gave those same connections a double on the abbreviated five-race qualifying session, rallying stoutly out of mid-division and pulling clear in deep stretch to defeat Siberian Storm by 3-1/4 lengths in 1:55.4. The son of Shanghai Phil and Hazel unleashed :28 stretch speed in his second morning appearance, after rallying into second behind overnight winner Hes Stalking You in his first qualifier.
Eternal Lee also became a two-time qualifying winner in as many tries, taking advantage of an upper-stretch break from pocket rival Irish Charm to amass 14 lengths of clearance over eventual runner-up, Royaltys Dream, in 2:00.3. Bob McClure drove the Southwind Frank-Charity Hall filly for trainer Julie Walker and owner Murray Ferguson Jr.
