Lucy Lucy and Fern Paquet Jr. took home Friday night’s $15,000 Fillies & Mares Open Handicap Pace at Tioga Downs
.
Lucy Lucy got away sixth in a field of six and was biding her time as Howard Parker and the favourite, Elusive Prey, cut through fractions of :26.4, :56.3 and 1:24.4 with Harper Lee (Jim Taggart Jr.) pressing the leader first over through the third quarter.
As the field went around the final turn Paquet was three-wide with Lucy Lucy charging to the lead and just held off a fast closing All Spirit (Jim Marohn Jr.) at the wire in 1:53.1.
It was the fifth win in 19 starts for the six-year-old daughter of Tough Sir-Small Change, who is trained by Mike Deters for Jay Sears of Florida. With the victory, Lucy Lucy increased her seasonal earnings to more than $48,000. Lucy Lucy was dismissed by the wagering public at 5-1 even though she won her last start at Tioga in the Fillies & Mares Open Pace on July 3.
