Trainer Ben Baillargeon scored three wins on the Tuesday (July 21) card at Woodbine Mohawk Park, including a win with P L Jill in the $36,000 Preferred Trot.
Away third heading to a :27.1 first quarter, driver Sylvain Filion sent P L Jill for the front but parked as Grandma Heidi battled back on the lead past a :55.4 half and through three-quarters in 1:23.1. P L Jill continued to battle first over turning into the stretch and Grandma Heidi eventually gave way. Through the stretch P L Jill held a slimming lead as stablemate Musical Rhythm rolled from last late to finish second by a head. Grandma Heidi settled for third.
A seven-year-old mare by Kadabra, P L Jill won her sixth race from 13 starts this season and her 30th from 106 overall, earning $567,693. Prince Lee Acres, Jill Coleman and Alan Christensen own the $6.00 winner.
Baillargeon’s other wins came prior to P L Jill’s victory. He sent HP Royal Theo ($2.70) to a victory in a $105,600 division of Ontario Sires Stakes Gold then returned to the winner’s circle in the next race following a five-length romp by Final Claim ($6.40).
