Cool Jazz turned a lot of heads with her performance in the opening leg of the Whenuwishuponastar Pacing Series for two-year-old fillies at Mohawk Racetrack last Thursday night.
The daughter of Rocknroll Hanover, out of the Cams Card Shark mare Cool Yankee, front-stepped her way to a four and three-quarter-length victory in a sharp 1:56.1 – an effort belying her lack of racing experience, given that this was only her second lifetime start.
It has earned the filly morning line odds of 4-5 in the first of two $20,000 divisions of the Whenuwishuponastar's second leg, which is to take place Thursday, July 23. Cool Jazz will be leaving from Post 3 with Randy Waples in the bike.
Jason Libby trains Cool Jazz, who was a $47,000 yearling purchase at last fall’s Lexington Select sale. She is owned by Robert J. Leblanc of Ridgefield, Connecticut.
The Gaetan Hebert-trained Art Major filly Major Girl will be partaking in the second of Thursday's Whenuwishuponastar divisions. The homebred filly sat out the first leg of the series, but was a confident 1:54.3 winner in her second pari-mutuel start, a division of the Robert Stewart Stakes at Mohawk on July 6. The filly has been gauged at even money in the morning line for the seven-filly dash.
The $53,000 final of the Whenuwishuponastar Series is slated for Thursday, July 30 at Mohawk.
