A relatively new commodity to Cape Breton is A Better Man, and the argument could be made that none have been better on the grounds at Northside Downs since the six-year-old made his local debut just under a month ago.
In four starts at Northside, A Better Man has posted two wins and two runner-up finishes, with his most recent victory coming on Saturday (July 2) in the top class $1,600 Winners Over Pace. With regular pilot Gerard Kennedy at the controls, A Better Man ($5.80) used his inside starting spot to his advantage and took the lead early. Posting panels of :28.1, :58.3 and 1:28, A Better Man kept control of the race and paced home in hand to hold off the first-over Mando Fun (Shawn Lynk) by three parts of a length for the 1:57.4 decision. Favoured Gentry Seelster (Larry Snow) couldn't find racing room late and had to settle for third.
Owned by Joseph Lewis of Sydney, N.S., A Better Man (Betterthancheddar - Beluga Hanover) picked up his 14th career score in his 94th attempt. The winner's share of the purse lifted his lifetime bankroll over the $83,000 mark.
