Get Wings delivered a front-end masterpiece to capture the 58th edition of the Governor’s Plate, presented by Summerside Chrysler Dodge, giving driver Paul Langille and trainer Vaughan Doyle their first victory in the East Coast Classic on Saturday, July 18 at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
Get Wings and Langille protected rail positioning in the $50,000 Governor’s Plate final, leading through early fractions of :26.4 and :55.4. He was engaged by defending champion Miki Shan N (Corey MacPherson), who rolled up first over going to the midway point and put the pacesetter to a drive in a battle to three-quarters in 1:23.4 with Ammo (Marc Campbell) primed from the pocket. Get Wings led into the stretch with Miki Shan N and Ammo grinding away and Jmr Speak Away (Gilles Barrieau) circling off cover. With four horses live in deep stretch, Get Wings hung on by a neck over Jmr Speak Away to triumph in 1:52.1. Miki Shan N finished third. Ammo was fourth, a quarter-length from the winner, with Arbitrage Hanover (Ken Murphy), who set a track record in his elimination, completing the top five.
Vaughan Doyle trains Get Wings, a four-year-old son of Bettors Wish-The Captains Angel, for owners Gary Ford of Stratford, P.E.I. and Janet Kinney of Wheatley River, P.E.I. Now on a five-race winning streak and six-for-seven since moving to P.E.I. from Ontario, the stallion is 10-for-24 this season. The Governor's Plate payday pushed his career earnings to $215,390 as he won for the 17th time in 47 starts. He paid $16 to win.
Lady Cafe Au Lait continued her domination of the aged pacing mare ranks with another track-record performance in the $17,500 Ruby Chappell Memorial Open Mares final. Marc Campbell sent the Earl Watts trainee charging to the lead from post seven, reaching the engine at the quarter in :27.1. The mare then controlled the tempo through :56.4 and 1:26 fractions before drawing clear by three lengths in 1:53.1. Redland Misspretty (Langille) finished second with Badgirl Bridgette (Jason Hughes) third. The winner tied the track record for aged pacing mares for the second straight week, putting her in the record books twice beside Woodmere Skyroller, Share The Moment and Get Answers.
Lady Cafe Au Lait extended her winning streak to nine, bringing her seasonal record to 11-for-14. The four-year-old Big Jim-Lady Latte mare arrived in the Maritimes following back-to-back wins at Woodbine Mohawk Park and has since gone seven-for-seven. Her career record now stands at 18-for-51 with $254,402 in earnings. She is owned by Windemere Farms of Springvale, P.E.I. and Matt and David Burke of Stratford. The win price was $2.20.
In the $20,000 Bob Dewar Memorial Governor’s Plate Consolation, Mappos Lion powered to the front before the three-quarters in 1:24 and opened up through the stretch to win by five lengths in 1:52.2 for driver Ryan Campbell and trainer Taylor Doyle. Pacesetter Tony Too Tall (Keith Legge), who led under pressure through the quarter in :27.1 and half in :55.1, finished second, while Twin B Tuffenuff (Barrieau) was third.
Mappos Lion, owned by Hailee Currie of Rocky Point, P.E.I. and Carol Campbell of Baddeck, N.S., is nine-for-10 this season. The nine-year-old Sunshine Beach-Pacific Playmate gelding has 39 career wins and $333,727 earned in 93 starts. His backers received a $6.30 payout.
Cattle Call scored his fifth consecutive victory in the first of three $20,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold divisions for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings. He led all the way for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Ron Matheson, setting splits of :28, :58.1 and 1:27.2 while tussling with Kapueno (Marc Campbell) from the half. He then vanquished that rival in the stretch to score in 1:55.4. Zero Two Sixty (David Dowling) got up for second over Kapueno.
Cattle Call is perfect in five starts this year with a pair of stakes victories for owner Friends And Family Stable of Nine Mile Creek, P.E.I. The son of Cattlewash-Bolero Tallia has racked up seven wins and $29,632 in earnings from 11 starts. He paid $3.20 to win.
Shanghai Whiskey ($4.90) captured the second Gold division in 1:55.4 for driver Marc Campbell and owner-trainer Wade Myers of Charlottetown, P.E.I. Third to the quarter in :27.4, he brushed to the top nearing the half in :57, took pressure from Tobins Gem (Langille) to three-quarters in 1:26.1, then shrugged him off and held on by three-quarters of a length over Darbies Fancy (Barrieau). Sporty Anthony (MacPherson) completed the triactor. The winning son of Shanghai Phil-Julep Hanover is now three-for-seven on the year and four-for-17 lifetime with $26,706 in the bank.
Windemere Britt ($3.30) dominated the third Gold division with a 1:56.2 front-end victory for Langille, trainer Kyle Williams and owner Dads Without Abs of Fredericton, P.E.I. On top to stations of :28.2, :58.4 and 1:28.2, he was wrapped up late as he coasted to a 1-1/2-length score. Oceanview Lou (Brodie MacPhee) finished second with Woodmere Mahomes (Barrieau) third. Windemere Britt, a Somewhere Fancy-Hart Of Windemere gelding, took his sixth lifetime win in 17 starts and grew his earnings to $49,237. He is four-for-six this season with three stakes wins.
Tobins April Fool ($23.50) prevailed by a head in the first $10,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Grassroots division in 1:57.3 for driver Brady Sweet and trainer Jeff Wallace. Blazing Cays ($5.10) and trainer-driver Darren Crowe won the second Grassroots split in 1:57.2. Elm Grove Untamed ($8.10) captured the final Grassroots contest in 1:56.3 for Dowling and trainer Jennifer Doyle.
Merigo Magic ($3.70) converted a pocket trip into a 1:53.1 victory in the $6,250 Preferred 2 Pace for trainer-driver Adam Merner. He slotted in early behind Freemans Legacy (Jaycob Sweet), stayed tight to the helmet through :27.3, :56.4 and 1:25.4 splits, then swung out in the stretch and collared him to win by 1-1/4 lengths. Brookdale Johnny (Langille) was third.
Merigo Magic's win ended a three-race streak of seconds for the five-year-old son of Tobago Cays-Meridian Magic and brought him to four-for-nine on the season. The gelding, owned by Mike May, Herman McQuaid and Derrick Cameron of Charlottetown, is now 25-for-60 lifetime and has banked $244,650. He paid $3.70 to win.
Marc Campbell tripled on the evening to seal his lead for the Basil Whelan Memorial Award for top driver of Governor’s Plate Week 2026. Jenn Doyle had a pair of training wins on the card.
The 15-dash Governor’s Plate Night program generated $254,239 in wagering, the largest single-card handle in the 150-year history of racing in Summerside. The Saturday total eclipsed the former record set the night before.
