Rookie Colts Headline Thursday's P.E.I. Colt Stakes

Canada’s oldest Standardbred stakes event continues on Thursday evening, July 18 as part of Governor’s Plate Week racing at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

The P.E.I. Colt Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts takes to the track on the Thursday card starting at 6 p.m.

The 12-dash card has a pair of $18,250 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold divisions for rookie pacing colts in races three and nine.

Dilicious gets top billing in the first $18,250 Gold division in race four for trainer-driver Darryl MacLean of Winsloe, P.E.I., who co-owns with Wade Peconi of Stanchel, P.E.I., Gordon MacLean of Winsloe, P.E.I. and Quispamsis, New Brunswick’s Stephen Downey. The Malicious stallion was victorious in both his qualifiers including a 13-length romp in his latest in 2:01.1 with this event his first pari-mutuel start. Other top contenders include Tobins Storm ( Bruce McGean) from post one and post six starter One Wicked Man (Kenny Arsenault).

Arthur Blue Chip colt Sergeant Crowley is the top contender in the race nine $18,250 Gold division with Robert Laffin at the lines for trainer Sifroi Melanson and owner Ultimate Stable of Greater Lakeburn, N.B. The rookie was a runner-up in his latest start at Truro Raceway while being race timed in 1:57.4. Im Sir Scarlet (MacLean) is a top billed entry from post five along with Income Approach (Clare MacDonald).

The $9,125 Grassroots divisions for two-year-old colts line up in races two, four, five, seven and 10.

Race six is the Derek Enman Memorial with Risin Horizon (Darren Crowe) the morning line favourite with post three for trainer Gardner McCallum and owner Wont Back Down Stable of North River, N.S.

Red Shores Summerside will race Monday, July 22, with post time at 6 p.m. This card will host the P.E.I. Colt Stakes two- and three-year-old trotters and overnight races that were cancelled due to inclement weather on Tuesday, July 16.

The draw date is tomorrow, Thursday, July 18. The box closes at 9 a.m. for overnights and 10 a.m. for stakes. All horses must declare – horses will not be carried over from the cancelled card.
