Modern Best and Icandothat were each victorious in their respective Wilsons Home Heating Fillies & Mares Series eliminations featured on Bring A Friend Day, Sunday, July 17, at Truro Raceway.
Favourite Modern Best ($4.40) romped to a six and a quarter-length victory in the first $1,250 elimination, leading from start to finish in 1:58.3 for driver Kirk Parris. Chris Covin trains the eight-year-old Modern Art mare for Nova Scotia owners Ian MacDonald of Lower Sackville and the CC Stables of Middle Sackville. M M Lass edged out Just Lovey for second-place honours.
Icandothat ($7.20) was also a wire-to-wire winner in the second elimination, capping off a natural hat-trick for driver Ryan Ellis of Brookfield, N.S. The six-year-old daughter of No Pan Intended stopped the clock in 1:58.2, with C L La Rousse finishing one and a half lengths behind in second and third prize going to Kendal Courageous. Ellis also bred and trains the winner, who is owned by his wife Danica.
