'The Girls' Battle In KD Series Elims

The Shebaran and Black Dahlia turned in a pair of winning performances in their respective $5,600 Just For The Girls Pacing Series eliminations for $7,500 claiming mares at Kawartha Downs on Saturday night

The Shebaran ($5.40) was a 1:54.3 wire-to-wire winner in the first elimination for driver Aaron Byron and trainer Richard Winacott. Armro Decal and Reg Gassien came on for second over pocket-sitter Ourfingersrcrossed and Brandon Campbell.

The eight-year-old Rambaran mare has won twice in 21 starts this year with six third-place showings to earn over $16,000. The victory was her 29th lifetime and pushed her overall earnings to over $215,000. Breeder Daniel Gassien shares ownership of the black mare with Barry McClennan.

Black Dahlia ($8.50) used a two-hole trip to her advantage to capture the next elimination in a career-best 1:55.2 with Brad Rae in the bike. Reg Gassien finished second again aboard Docs Honey while Lady Luck Killean and driver Kevin Austin rounded out the top three. The popular pacesetter Tjs Ellie and Brandon Campbell faded to fourth.

Trainer Jeff Durham co-owns the six-year-old Goliath Bayama miss, who earned her first win in 17 seasonal starts, with Jack and Glen Durham. The black mare notched her third lifetime win to push her seasonal earnings to nearly $14,000 while her overall bankroll climbed to over $87,000.
