Trotters Head To Summerside For P.E.I. Colt Stakes

The finest two and three-year-old trotters in Atlantic Canada will head to Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway for Governor’s Plate Week racing on Tuesday, July 16 for the P.E.I. Colt Stakes.

The 11-dash Tuesday card starts off at 6 p.m., with Mile Hill Waylon starting off his career in the first $13,000 division in race two. The son of Mile Hill Willie has Gilles Barrieau set to drive from post three in his P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old trot colt division for trainer Paul Morrison and owners John and Barbara Breau of Shediac Cape, N.B. His main rivals are Camco Thor (Myles Heffernan Sr.) and Marcus Down Ridge (Clare MacDonald).

The other $13,000 two-year-old trot division in race seven features Fire The Rocket favoured for trainer Ashley Gamester and owner Donald MacRae of Orwell, P.E.I. Ken Murphy is listed to drive the E L Rocket colt. Other top entries are Dusty Lane Gus (Adam Merner) and West River Jet (Ken MacDonald).

The $13,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old trot filly division is in race four. Supreme Rockette (Corey MacPherson) is the top choice from post one after winning her Atlantic Sires Stakes division at the Truro Raceway on July 5. Mike McGuigan trains the E L Rocket filly for owner Jamie Whalen of Avondale, P.E.I. Her stablemate, Oceanview Nikki (McGuigan), has post five after also winning her career debut.

The P.E.I. Colt Stakes three-year-old colt trot division in race six carries a $13,000 purse. Gettin Lit (McGuigan) will leave from post three as the favourite for owner Whalen. His competition includes Camco Laraido (Ken Murphy) and W L Roseys Rocket (Campbell).

Dusty Lane Darby is the top selection in race eight in a $13,000 three-year-old colt trot division for driver Merner, trainer Melissa Rennie and  owners Herman McQuaid of Charlottetown and Jared Perrot of Stratford, P.E.I. Rocket Blast will loom the danger from post five with a win, a second and a third from three starts in 2024. Corey MacPherson will drive that son of E L Rocket for trainer Carl Bagnall.

Oceanview Daisy (pictured above) has rail control in the lone three-year-old trot filly division for $13,000 in race three. Heffernan drives for trainer Myles Heffernan Jr., and owners Jackie Heffernan of Summerville and Barry MacLeod of Cardigan, P.E.I. The E L Rocket filly set a track record in her last start at Truro Raceway, winning in 1:59.1. She will face off with last year’s Atlantic Breeder’s Crown champ Dusty Lane Wee (Marc Campbell, who has post four.

The official post position draw for the 56th edition of the Governor’s Plate, presented by Summerside Chrysler Dodge, will take place at 7 p.m. trackside.
