After winning on July 8 in a lower level, Global News didn’t mind the step up the classification ladder into Hiawatha’s $5,000 Preferred 3 Trot on Saturday, July 15.
The four-year-old daughter of Archangel got away fifth for driver Garrett Rooney while Spun From Magic (Alfred Carroll) led the field through a fast opening fraction of :27.3 before backing down the half to :58.
Favourite Marvin Hagler (Mark MacQuarrie) pulled first-over to apply pressure to the leader and would also give cover to the eventual winner.
As the three-quarter time of 1:27.1 was put up, the top four were lined up in pairs before Rooney moved three-wide and drew away to win in 1:58 while holding off Monteverdi (Natasha Day). Spun From Magic held third.
Owned and trained by Angie Carroll of Iona, Ont., Global News paid $6.60 to win. The victory was the seventh lifetime for Global News and it boosted her career earnings to just over $69,000.
