According to today's edition of Harness Tracks of America's Daily Newsletter, the Speaker of the House in Massachusetts, Robert DeLeo, has announced that slots at the state’s racetracks are “going to be the initial threshold” of any plan to bring casino gambling to the state.
DeLeo, whose district includes Suffolk Downs and Wonderland dog track, has been a strong supporter of slots at tracks even before he assumed the role as the new Speaker.
A legislative debate on the slots issue is expected this fall, and DeLeo’s comments on radio station WBUR made clear his intention of insisting on slots at the four Massachusetts tracks, including HTA member Plainridge Racecourse, as an opening round in the forthcoming battle.
