Beautiful Soul was the runner-up last week to Poppys Bucky Boy in the $6,500 Winners Over Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway, but took over the lead in the stretch and held off that rival on Sunday night for his turn in the spotlight.

Ok Ebury (Sylvain Lacaille) led the field of eight through fractions of :27.3, :58.1 and 1:26.1 while the Kevin Benn-trained Beautiful Soul and driver Gord Brown advanced first over from fifth. The leader was swarmed on from all angles in the stretch, with Beautiful Soul rolling by for the 1:55.3 triumph over the wide-rallying favourite, Poppys Bucky Boy (Stephane Pouliot), who finished half a length behind in second. Thats The Life (Denis St. Pierre) closed up the inside to edge out Ok Ebury for third.

Beautiful Soul paid $7.50 to win as the second wagering choice.

Owned and bred by Mark Powell of Belleville, Ont., the eight-year-old son of Northern Luck notched his second win this year and 20th lifetime, pushing his earnings to $190,796.
