Trot Radio has spoken to Nick Coukos, Vice-President, Corporate Affairs at Ajax Downs about the upturn in the popularity of Quarter Horse Racing and Coukos reveals some exciting news for
the Oshawa-area racing strip.
Ground crews have begun turning the sod on a five-eighths mile track that could, according to Coukos, hold both Thoroughbred and Standardbred action in the future.
“I’m keeping an open mind,” Coukos told Trot Radio host Norm Borg. “We just wanted to make sure we are in a position to be current with what happens in the racing industry in the future."
In addition, Coukos says Ajax Downs will have up to 800 slots in operation by February of 2010. With Standardbred owners such as David Heffering venturing into Quarter Horse racing, it speaks to the developing popularity of the sport according to Coukos.
With per card purses frequently in the range of $100,000, Coukos stated that Ajax Downs was ahead of Fort Erie in that category.
